Thanks to the MCU debuts of characters like Jack Russell (Gael Garcia Bernal) and Man-Thing, traditional monsters are finally coming to the franchise.

According to Michael Giacchino, his goal has always been to tell a very human story when dealing with Marvel’s first creature feature, adding depth to types of monsters that weren’t available before.

“Often, even in Marvel movies, monsters are often used as something to kill, and something to defeat. And I like, no, monsters are just someone with a problem, and they can’t solve it,” the director said in an interview with fandom. “Everything I loved when I was a kid was about these things [monster] The films are that they were symbolic of people in pain and in need of help. And I felt that’s the point of view we should take with this. It can’t just be “Oh, there’s something different, let’s destroy it!” There’s a lot of that going on in our world these days.”

Then, Giacchino made his best impression on Shrek, comparing the monsters to onions whose layers had to be peeled again as his character evolved.

Giacchino continued, “I wanted to do something about, No, let’s peel back the layers of onions and understand what’s behind this thing being a monster. Why is that happening? None of these monsters want to be monsters.” “They don’t want to go around killing people indiscriminately and destroying things. It’s just, that’s their lot in life. Everyone has a lot in life, we all have some struggles, kind of things that we struggle to solve or deal with ourselves. And that’s where we I want to go to him with this story.”
